Five Questions to John Hayward
How would you describe your photography to someone who has never seen it?
A visual diary of my travels! From epic mountains in Snowdonia to A-Frame cabins along the Icelandic coast and everything in between. I enjoy shooting through all seasons, but I especially love being out with my camera on moody days, and I have a soft spot for capturing wildlife.
What makes a great photograph?
I think that a great photograph should always tell a story. I always try to find ways to add interest to a photograph, whether that be finding a compelling foreground subject, putting myself into the photograph, searching for light and shadows and so on. Always observe what’s around you – something interesting is never far away.
What’s your main source of inspiration when you’re behind the camera?
Being outside, exploring new places, and returning to my favourite spots always give me an abundance of inspiration. I know what I love and that’s basically what I try to capture in my work. My inspiration also comes from music and reading.
How is the photography industry changing in the digital era?
Photography is mostly changing for the good in the digital era. It’s great to have access to so many sources of inspiration in the palm of my hand. Having the ability to share my work online is amazing and connects me with so many like-minded people.
Have you heard of Blockchain and if so, what are your views on it?
No, I haven’t, unfortunately, this is an area that I am yet to explore, but I will most definitely look into it.
